Italy in September

Italy in September is absolutely one of the best months to travel there. It is beyond the August shut down when everyone in the whole country is on vacation. The evenings are cooler and days are the perfect sunny weather, really a true pleasure. I was born in Italy as is obvious by my accent and travel many times a year to Italy. This happened to be a particularly pleasant visit that I thought to share with you.
My business trip included a trip to the Basaltina quarry which is located between Florence and Rome, close to Perugia. This stone is one of the rarer ones available as there are very few quarries in operation. Basaltina is dark grey lava like stone, quite porous and textured.
I am attaching some photos for your education. For those interested in the "High end Retail" use of Basaltina this material is used extensively in the Dolce Gabbana Stores designed by David Chipperfield Architects. The primary purpose of our trip was to meet with our stone inspector, the factory to select the material, process and timing of fabrication for an upcoming installation.
The project will also include Absolute Black from Zimbabwe and Jura Limestone from Germany.
As many of you know enjoying fabulous food and tasting some of the great wines is part of the joy of travel even if work is part of the trip. I was fortunate enough to run into a wine connoisseur whom educated me on the "super tuscan" wines. Per this man the award winners are Ornellaia 1998, Massetto 2000, Sasicaia 2003, and Solaia 2006. If you ever have the opportunity to buy these wines or taste them let me know what you think.
